Lathrop was platted in 1867, and named in honor of a pioneer citizen. A post office called Lathrop has been in operation since 1868.
Lathrop is located at 39°32′57″N 94°19′47″W (39.549153, -94.329747). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.79 square miles (4.64 km²), all of it land.
