Richmond was platted in 1828. The community was named after Richmond, Virginia. A post office called Richmond has been in operation since 1828.
Richmond is located at 39°16′39″N 93°58′33″W (39.277550, -93.975907). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.90 square miles (15.28 km²), of which, 5.88 square miles (15.23 km²) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km²) is water.
